Some popular products you will never find in my cart, and the better alternatives I use instead. Every conventional cleaning product I've swapped, with the why and the what.
The cleaning aisle is one of the worst offenders in the entire grocery store. Fragrance, quats, phthalates, dioxins, chlorine, dyes. We're cleaning our homes with the stuff making us sick. Here's the full swap list, brand by brand.
Skip: Tide. Use: Branch Basics or Truly Free.
Tide contains dioxins (probable carcinogen), 1,4-dioxane (probable carcinogen), phthalates (endocrine disruptors), alkylphenol ethoxylates (hormone disruptors), and quaternary ammonium compounds (respiratory irritants).

Branch Basics Concentrate
One concentrate replaces every cleaner in your house, including laundry. Plant & mineral based, no synthetic fragrance, EWG verified.
I rotate Branch Basics with Truly Free (code ANEESA for 30% off) depending on what's on sale.
Skip: Dawn. Use: Attitude or Branch Basics.
Dawn contains SLS/SLES, DEA, phthalates, and artificial dyes. The "tough on grease" magic is also tough on your endocrine system.
Better options:
- Attitude Dish Soap
- Branch Basics — works for handwashing too
Skip: Clorox. Use: Force of Nature.
Every Clorox product is known to cause allergy, respiratory, skin irritations, and reproductive and developmental issues. Don't get me started on the smell.
Better disinfectant: Force of Nature. Electrolyzed water based, hospital-grade disinfectant, zero chemistry to fear.
For wipes: Biom Wipes.
Skip: Febreeze and plug-ins. Use: Vitruvi or Truly Free.
"Fragrance" is a legal black box. Manufacturers can hide hundreds of chemicals, many endocrine-disrupting, behind that one word. Plug-ins are the worst — constantly aerosolizing into the air your kids breathe.
- Vitruvi — for essential oil diffusing without synthetic anything
- Grow Fragrance Spray — plant-based room spray
"If you can smell it across the room, you're breathing it in. 'Fresh scent' is not a feature, it's a warning."
Skip: Cascade. Use: Blueland or Branch Basics.
Cascade pods contain bleaching agents and undisclosed fragrance. See my full Dishwasher Soap post for my three favorites. Quick answer: Blueland, Branch Basics, or Truly Free.
Skip: Charmin. Use: Plant Paper or Reel.
Charmin has chemicals, chlorine, and PFAS (forever chemicals). On the part of your body that absorbs everything.
Skip: Swiffer Wet Cloths. Use: a real mop.
Swiffer wet cloths contain 2-butoxyethanol (respiratory irritant), quats, ethoxylated alcohol, and undisclosed fragrance. Honestly, there's no good "swap product" here. The answer is a steam mop with the floor spray from Truly Free.
Don't fall for greenwashing.
These brands look clean but aren't:
- Method — "fragrance" black box
- Mrs. Meyer's — same fragrance issue, plus harsh surfactants
- Seventh Generation — better than most, but not where I'd land if I had a choice
The brands that pass my standards: Branch Basics, Truly Free, Blueland, Rowe Casa Organics, Attitude, and Koala Eco.
